Sundial in the snow

Although I've been submitting pictures to Photo Friday for a while, I've been lax in posting my selections here. I love archaic-looking items, and sundials are among the coolest bits of olde tech ever, so I had to share this with everyone.
In '05, I did the walking tour at Lowell Observatory. It was March, and while spring had mostly arrived, snow was falling when we took the tour. It was a wet, slushy spring-time snow, and I love how it brought out the contours of the patina on this lovely sundial. Too bad it doesn't have a base more elegant than haphazard concrete.

Fox Tucson Theatre

Here's my latest for Photo Friday. This week's challenge is "professional". The folks who did the Fox Theatre restoration are among the best Tucson has to offer. The amount of detail in that place is astounding, and it's absolutely breathtaking now that it's finished. One of the perks of my job is getting a behind the scenes peek at major restoration and renovation projects before they're open to the public. I love seeing historical buildings in-progress. It gives you a much better sense of the layers of history, and of the craftsmanship, than just seeing the finished product.

New York City at night

...and that means it's time for yet another Photo Friday entry. This week's prompt is "electricity", and I don't think there's much in my collection that speaks to this theme more perfectly than New York City aglow. I live in the lightening capital of the world (or one of), but my poor little camera isn't quite up to capturing a summer storm just yet. Maybe soon, though. That'd be the ultimate image for this theme!
Anyhoo, Happy Friday everyone!

Submitted for the Photo Friday "far from home" challenge.
Runners up were:

This is from the 2005 Dead Runners Society World Conference that we hosted in Tucson. Jim Puckett led the gang on a morning run up the Sabino Canyon main road and back on the Phone Line Trail. I was too out of shape to do the run, but I was able to snap a couple of pictures before they got too far down the road. It was an absolutely gorgeous May morning, and despite the traditional cries of "Jim Puckett tried to kill me!", everyone seemed to have a good time, and no one went over the edge :)

This week's challenge is "what is that?". Nothing quite like a bizarre desert plant to fit the bill :)

Had another photo I couldn't resist entering. This week's challenge: "The Machine". Too bad my shots of the big Clark 'scope didn't turn out so well - that one's much more visually impressive.
