Back to running?

  • Jul. 7th, 2009 at 12:29 AM
Good morning Gil
It's too early to say if my knees are up to anything serious, but thanks to [info]edda's inspiration, I hopped on the treadmill and pounded out the first workout of the Couch to 5k plan. My really bad knee was sore, but never did the sharp OMG STOP IMMEDIATELY pain, so maybe I am on the mend. Drove back to the housesitting place w/ the ice pack on my knee, and it seems to be doing pretty well...so far. We'll see if I can move in the morning.

Found a bark scorpion in the tub, too. Sigh. I wrangled it into a big ziploc freezer bag (couldn't find any tupperware, and couldn't bring myself to get close enough to step on it - not after last year's sting). I think my little friend is destined for a trip to said freezer. Eugh. Hopefully this'll be my last encounter of the week.

Oh, and being the dorky shutterbug I am, I did get off a few snaps w/ the good camera before bagging it. More fodder for my creepy crawlies folder on flickr :)

fun times @ the office

About a half hour ago, the ventilation clunked off and the fire alarm started going off in our building. This happens far too frequently. Something's wonky w/ the electrical system or the condenser or somesuch, and it overloads. We all dragged ourselves out to the library plaza and waited for someone to tell us we could go back into the building.
We heard sirens coming from the downtown fire station, and a couple of minutes later, this pulls up in front of the building.

TFD Fire truck

A few minutes later, this comes and parks around the corner.

TFD Ladder Tender

That's the ladder tender truck, for those keeping score at home. Suddenly this is looking a lot less like a fire drill and a lot more like a legitimate fire in a multi-story building. Then there's a scream and a screech of brakes and a woman is down in the crosswalk. Yep...a pedestrian got hit by a car Right In Front Of the Firetrucks. Sigh. She went down on her back and we all saw her head smack against the pavement. Ow. Luckily, there were a bunch of EMTs already on-site. She was up and walking under her own power shortly - hopefully more scared than hurt.

We're back in the building and the emergency vehicles have just pulled away, so all should be well. Final tally - two fire trucks, one ladder tender, two police cruisers, and an ambulance. (And a partridge in a pear tree).

In about 5 hours, I'm driving over Amanda's to drive her to Tucson Orthopedic for knee reconstruction surgery. Thanks to the evil genius of my friends and my boss, I've got all sorts of interesting pranks to pull on my poor, vicodin-addled friend. muahahahaha. I'll be hanging out with her for the next couple of days - playing nursemaid, keeping the house running, and raiding her stash of Hansen's mandarin lime soda. Ohhh, yes.
Further bulletins (and pictures!) as events warrant.

Oh, there's some spiffy Mount Lemmon pix on my flickr stream now. We took a labor day trek up the mountain and had some breathtaking clouds and views along the way. And lots of rain at the top. Good times :)

How 'bout that storm, 'eh?

Right around 9pm, this hurricane-like thing descended upon my house. Wind was whistling under the doors, rain was lashing the windows, the palm trees outside were whipping, and my cat slunk into the bathroom in mortal terror.
Power flickered on and off, and Country Club became a raging river.

I couldn't see much of the damage from my morning commute, but here's a couple highlights -

Prince & Tucson

Downed power line at Tucson Blvd. and Prince Rd (on Tucson). The stoplight was out and they had temporary stop signs turning the intersection into a 4-way stop. HA! People have enough trouble w/ the 4-way at Country Club. You should have seen the line of cars backed up!

Also,

Prince & Campbell

One of the venerable old trees at Prince & Campbell was down. There were lots of patches of ash from police flares at almost every intersection. If I didn't have to come in to work today, I so would have been out exploring damage last night. Sigh.

Instead, I stayed in and did a double whammy of yoga and pilates workouts via DVD. Probably not the smartest thing I've ever done, but I had some aggression to work off. Now my back is killing me and I'm still peeved. Oh well. I continue my quest for one hundred pushups tonight. It's a struggle, but I'm still on track. Halfway through week 3 - 3 more to go!

Candles on my TV
Originally uploaded by midwinter.

Apparently two large storm cells converged somewhere in the vicinity of my house. It started raining buckets around 7pm, and then at 7:20, there was a terrific FlashBoom and the house went dark. I always have a row of candles on my TV, so I lit those, then rummaged through the Christmas supplies and set up clusters throughout the house. The storm raged for another hour and finally started petering out around 8:45. Shortly thereafter, the power came back on. It was fun while it lasted :)

Are you sure it's not still Monday?

I've been plagued with a headache since about midnight last night. It is Not Fun. I thought I had advil with me, but it's apparently at home. ARgh.

In happier news, summer plans roll on. Tomorrow night, my neighbor and I are going to see the Indigo Girls @ the Rialto. I haven't seen them since they came to Luther in 1994 (ish). I'm not a huge fan, but they put on a good show, so it'll be a fun way to spend an evening.

My new laptop came last week and seems to be working just fine. I haven't had a chance to sit down and import all my backed-up files from the old machine, but my existence is largely web-based, so I'm not missing much. I'm debating dressing it up w/ some stickers or...something. I've always been a bit of a purist, preferring to keep things pristine in case of resale, but I seem to be keeping my laptops until I run them into the ground, so I might as well have fun w/ 'em in the meantime. There's a Guster bumper sticker that's been sitting on my bookshelf for a long, long time. I think the new machine needs it. Maybe a NaNo sticker or three, too. We'll see :)

Finally, continuing my tradition of travelling insanely long distances to see Rush in concert, I just booked a flight to Raleigh-Durham in July. I'll be hooking up with [info]boilerbonehead and his gf (yay, free lodging) for some sightseeing and a show. Should be awesome. I hope the humidity doesn't kill me. I'm fine w/ heat, but have never experienced 90+ degree temps + near equal humidity. We'll see how it goes. I predict many pictures of me looking wilted.

[info]edda, are you anywhere near Raleigh? I have no sense of scale or driving distances in the east, but if you fancy a road trip, lemme know. The schedule is still pretty open, and there's this really neat looking museum exhibit on Pompeii in Charlotte. Also, our charlotte hotel is right near a movie theatre, so there could be a superhero movie screening worked in. Oh, and a Ruby Tuesday restaurant. Good times!

In general news, the summer heat is officially here, and we've got record or near record highs all this week. My boss came in earlier with a bright red face, dripping sweat. It was 106-ish then. I sucked it up and hit the track at Pima College for 3 miles of running/walking last night - it was 97 when we started, 93 when we finished (after 10pm!). They should have awards for that kind of fortitude. It's brutal.
My current running shoes are entirely worthless right now, and have moved beyond "broken down" and into "instant injury" range. Sore arches, sore joints, sore ankles. The shoes are a deathtrap and I'll be procuring a new pair this weekend. Hopefully the ankle twinges will fade with proper footwear. Runner-folk here know of which I speak.

Anyhoo...got a couple more hours to look busy here @ work, and then I get to run myself ragged with errands tonight. The fun never stops ;)

Hope you're all staying happy (and out of this !@%^(* heat!).

the saga of the laptop

A few months ago, my trusty old behemoth, the Fujitsu, started crashing. I'd be going along just fine when *BAM*, Blue Screen of Death. This started just before November, so you can imagine my dismay. NaNoWriMo without a laptop? Augh.
Luckily, the bf had an extra, older laptop that I could borrow, so that got me through November.
He's pretty sure the reason for Dief's crashing lies in a thermal issue. The fan is on its last legs, and the laptop has always run hot.

After months of penny pinching and shopping around, I finally decided to order a refurb unit from the Lenovo outlet. It was a lower end model, but plenty for my needs. My only sticking point was that I wanted a machine with Windows XP. I refuse to get Vista. The Lenovo outlet had quite a few XP machines, so I found one in my price range and ordered one.

UPS was supossed to deliver it on Tuesday, but no one was home (signature required), so they left a call tag on the door and said they'd be back between 2-5pm. Jason volunteered to camp out at my place while I was at work. 5pm came and went, and no UPS guy. At 6, I called and they verified that yes, the package was still on a truck, and it was still in my area. 7pm came and went, and no laptop.

Sigh.

Jason camped out at my house *again* Tuesday and the laptop was finally delivered. YAY! I cut open the box and pulled out a behemoth laptop (widescreen - yikes! But at least it's lighter than Dief) and noticed a sticky smear of silver where a product tag had been removed from the bottom. Hmm. I also noticed a Microsoft sticker with a Vista certificate. Uh-oh. Pried open the laptop lid and saw another Vista Basic sticker on the front. Crap. Booted it up and, yep, it booted to Vista Basic. AUGH!

I called Lenovo and got a recording saying that, due to "unexpected circumstances", the call center was not available. "Typhoon?" Jason joked. *snerk*
I had the contact info for a sales rep, so I emailed him my tale of woe and went on with my night.

Wednesday morning I had a very apologetic email from the sales rep (based in Canada?), and instructions for who to call to get a return authorization. A mere 5 minutes on the phone with Ritu Raj in India and I had a RMA and a UPS return label. He even waited on the phone for the label to hit my email inbox. Kudos. It's also nice to see they let the phone reps use their real(?), Indian name. No more of this "Hello, this is Fred, can I help you?". Ritu passed me off to someone in the salesguy's department, and, after trying to track the guy down, they promised me a call-back. Well, of course that never came, but I went back to the Lenovo site and found a similar machine that claimed to have WinXP. I sent the details to the salesguy and said that if he could verify it had the processor and OS it said, I'd order it. He wrote back confirming the details and gave me his sales ID so he could expedite the order.

So...After a couple interesting days, I have one laptop on return, and a shiny "new" one on expedited order.

We'll see how this goes. Maybe it'll be here in time for NaNoWriMo ;)

Almost time to hit the road

Mountain Dew will pull us through
Tomorrow at oh-dark-thirty, I'm flying out of here. Thanks to the wackiness that is the airline routing system, I'm bouncing through Atlanta to get to Moline, IL. Ugh. Nothing like overshooting your destination by a few states  :P
Saturday morning, we're loading up the minivan with kids, pets, and food, and hitting the road back to Tucson. I'm going to try to find wifi hotspots along the way, but I might be out of touch until Tuesday sometime. Guess I'll do the LJ "no posting day" boycott by proxy.  heh.

This should be quite the adventure. Here's hoping we avoid the floods and thrills of tornado alley. See y'all on the flipside!

I keep my caffeine and lunch in the fridge downstairs so I'll get up and move around during the day. I just ran down to get a drink and was nearly bowled over in the stairwell. It REEKS of pot smoke. Not just a trace, or a "huh, did I just imagine it?", but full on reek.

*gag*

There a social service agency on the first floor of the building - looks like their clientèle got into the stairwell and lit up. Thanks for sharing guys. /sarcasm

Guess I'll be using the west stairwell today...

goals

Posting some goals for the week to keep myself honest :)

1. Make outline sheet for '05 NaNo
2. Put in at least 10 hours on extracurricular work project
3. Finish first TBR challenge book of the year

There. That oughta keep me busy.

2008's off to a decent start. I'm bound and determined to recoup my running fitness from this past fall (well underway) and to make it to -at least-the Spring Cross Country Classic injury-free and ready to run. Not sure about racing yet, but it's sure an appealing thought.
My weight is still (grumble grumble) up from where it should be, but so long as the fitness is coming around, I don't mind so much. January 19th is the big Day of Reckoning. I started seriously tracking my weight on that day last year w/ a rough goal of losing 2 pounds per month. I'm a bit off that, but still quite pleased with the progress. Update on that on Saturday :)
After the big site changeover at coolrunning.com, I switched my running log (and loyalties) to a fairly new site called RunningAhead. I LOVE the log there. It feeds my need for instant feedback, and tracks everything that's important to me - mileage on shoes, routes, weight and running effort. Actually, it's got the ability to track far more data than I'd ever need, but I'm glad the potential is there.
One little tidbit on the site that I'm having too much fun with is the shoe "value" calculator. You enter the price you paid for a pair of shoes, and it calculates the cost per mile of running on them. Right now I'm at about $0.45/mile and I guesstimate I've got at least 50-100 miles left in these shoes. Much love for the Mizuno!

Eh...there's other things to write about, but nothing I want to get into just yet.

In other news, two of my favorite people on the planet have birthdays today: [info]edda, and my friend Jim Puckett (up on Phoenix). Happy Birthday, guys!!

Me - exhausted. drained.

Kick-off party - teh awesome. Got home around 3am. (pix will be up as soon as I get my camera cable)

Novel - teh suxor. Wrote about 700 words, then was falling asleep on my feet.

Still have no ideas, no inspiration. Well, ideas, but no brain power.

Eyes feel bleary and red-rimmed.

Hoping to be recharged after a nap, but not holding my breath.

Want my brain power back.

Need to write a minimum of 1500 more words today. Need to run tonight.
Not mutually exclusive, but right now neither one has much appeal.

This sounds really depressing and crabby, but it's just tired. Mood is actually quite chipper.

Off to read and hope I fall deep asleep...

Yay NaNo!

a kind of gloomy thursday

  • Oct. 25th, 2007 at 9:47 AM
emo!
For the past couple of days, I've been moderately incapacitated by sciatica. I have a tiny glimmer of empathy for the plight of people in chronic pain now. Ugh. There's just *nothing* you can do to get comfortable. My arms and legs trembled every time I tried to do anything significant (like, oh, stand!), and the constant, low-grade pain made me incredibly jittery and crabby. It's mostly better today, but a lot of the jitteriness remains. It's also making me over-emotional. Un-fun.

In other news, I've been playing phone tag w/ the doctor's office again. A couple of months ago, something wonky was going on with my throat. It felt like there was a small lump somewhere near my tonsils. It felt like small food was snagging going down, and like, no matter how hard I swallowed, there was always something in the way. My doctor was out on maternity leave, so I got some idiot fill-in. He gave me the usual "you're just a silly, hysterical female" routine. He insisted it was just dehydration - was I drinking enough water? - and took a cursory glance at my throat. He gave me a referral for an x-ray, at my insistence, and shooed me out the door with repeated admonitions to drink more water, shaking his head at my ignorance. (Yes, he was literally shaking his head in disbelief when I insisted on an x-ray)

Got the x-ray done and waited for results. Spent a week being very sick from all the barium goop they made me chug. Called the x-ray place...they said the results had been sent to the jerk doctor. Called the Dr's office and they said the records hadn't been entered in the system yet. Called again and they said the results were on jerk doctor's desk, but he hadn't had a chance to look over them yet. Blah Blah...runaround.

A couple of days ago, I found out my normal doctor was back from maternity leave. While I was home, doped up on advil for the sciatica, I started calling around again. They had no record of my x-rays, the x-ray place had no record of me showing up, etc etc. ARGH.

This morning, I got a call while on my way in to work. There's a prescription waiting for me at Walgreens, and a referral letter to an ear/nose/throat specialist is coming in the mail. Something's definitely wonky, and it needs attention, fast.

Sure, I'm just dehydrated.

Thanks for your consideration, Dr. Jerk.

('course, now I'm worried about what might be going on with me. They never tell you anything over the phone. Grr)

A few other, much less significant, angsty things are going on, but nothing terribly earthshattering. I'm more concerned about my health than anything else right now. I better have some answers before nano starts :P

trying to stay awake...

  • Oct. 11th, 2007 at 10:52 AM
Mountain Dew will pull us through
I've had no more than 6 hours of sleep any night in the past week (4 1/2 last night), and it's really taking a toll. While most people get puffy, baggy eyes and dark circles, I get a little red stripe at the outside corners of my eyes. Think Cleopatra, in red. It's subtle, but always lets me know when I've pushed too far.
Today's beverage of choice is Trader Joe's Energy in Orange Passion. If I drink the entire can, it'll clock in at just under the caff of a Rockstar drink. (75mg per serving, 2 per can). Unlike sodas, these TJ's drinks tend to give me more stable energy that lasts over a few hours. Mountain Dew, regardless of sugar content (diet or regular) is usually only good for an hour's spike in alertness.
So, yay for a new drink fix.
Boo for 260 calories per can, but I usually only drink half a day, so all's well.

Why do I care about calories? Well, generally, I *don't*, but since January, I've been making a slightly more intensive effort towards losing weight. I use an Excel spreadsheet that as a "trend weight" formula that smooths out the daily spikes and dips and gives you a much more accurate gauge of your true heft. I started at 162.4 and finally, FINALLY got my trend weight down to 152.4 earlier this week. This morning, the trend dropped to 152.2. Seeing as that's a running average, it takes a lot longer than the daily weights to get down, so...YAY. I can finally say, without hesitation, that I have shaved off 10 pounds. Quite a few inches, too.
I'm also just about in-shape for a 5k next week. Last year we did more walking than running and came in at around 35 minutes. This year I'm hoping to break 30 minutes. We haven't done a 3 mile uninterrupted run yet, but we have done several runs totaling more than 30 minutes with only minor walk breaks...so...we'll see.
Last year, I was over 170 pounds on race day. I can't help but be faster now :)

NaNoWriMo planning and scheming is coming along pretty well. The bf has been working his l337 computer skillz and will have something really spiffy for everyone soon. I'm sorting and organizing all my helper files - the character generation sheets, random plot generators, etc, and will have it all posted on a web site w/in a week. It's turning into gobs of work, but it's fun, so not too exhausting. I've been in touch with several locations regarding room reservations for write-ins, and they're all being evasive, so I'm going to make a few housecalls this weekend and get everything firmed up.
Close to 350 people signed up in Tucson so far...I expect that to grow now that the nano site is mostly functional. Whuff whuff. October is never a dull month!

Tonight I'm going to meet w/ a volunteer coordinator at the Friends of the Library and see if I can get more involved there. Warehouse volunteers get first dibs on incoming books ;) After that, I meet the bf for a run on the Rillito, and then home to crash...hard.

It'll be interesting to see how long this TJ's drink keeps me going. It's a war of wills at this point...

between the wheels

  • Jul. 27th, 2007 at 1:42 AM
in my own world (Peanuts)
You know how that rabbit feels goin' under your spinning wheels...

Between the Wheels was the surprise "out of the vault" song on the last Rush tour, and right now, yes, I do know exactly how that rabbit feels. Sometime between lunch and dinner yesterday, my body decided to let me know I had picked up a case of food poisoning. Last night was the lower system purge...today has been the extremely ill stomach. I've been able to eat and drink just fine, but I've got this constant, nagging case of really bad indigestion frequently punctuated with sharp pain. As a result, I'm exhausted. Hardly eating plus being in constant pain will do that to a person.

In a little over 12 hours, I'm leaving for Phoenix to go see my favoritest band of all time with my two best friends. I was pretty woozy tired for Dream Theater and missed out on a lot of the wow factor because of it. If I'm this ill tomorrow, the Rush show is going to be severely compromised. I'm very peeved with my stupid body right now.

That is all.

sanity

Dream Theater - band shot
My sanity is a bit lacking lately. My brain is doing this ADD 'hive of activity' thing - pinging from thought to thought, topic to topic at light speed. I kept a running list for a couple of moments and it ran the gamut from "Wow, I love this new Dream Theater album" to "Must unpack those two boxes in the hall closet at home" to "I wonder if rushtour.com is still around" to "did I hear back on that cost estimate yet?". A roughly 1:4 ratio of work-related thoughts to sheer randomness. Not bad.

The new Dream Theater album is...quite good. Good enough to be left on repeat for half a workday. Good enough to leave me craving more. I'm addicted. So cannot wait for the July 27th show.

The first month of being a home owner is an exercise in saintly patience. I'm waiting for my first round of utility/mortgage/random bills, calling to correct the addressing mistakes that EVERYONE is making, squabbling with companies to get this or that right, and then more waiting. I have seen more variants on my zip code and my unit number than I thought possible. Also have received at least 7 bits of mortgage spam in the past week. They're easy to catch because they get the lending company wrong. Morons.

I'm going to be so much happier once everything is accounted for, and the waiting game is over.

I've also got a head full of vivid writing ideas, but they're flitting around like superheated molecules in a small space, so it's been impossible to snag any and commit them to print. Part of me cares, part of me couldn't care less. I'm feeling decidedly bipolar these days. Whee.

Time to go listen to Forsaken again :) (Cuz really, who doesn't love a prog rock band tackling an angsty, Evanescence knock-off, vampire love song!). Need an idea for NaNo? Pick up Dream Theater's Systematic Chaos. We've got vampires, we've got cursed pharohs, we've got tragic love, we've got ADD (seriously - track 3 - Constant Motion)). Ahh, good stuff.

zombies?

Whoa...I think I missed a memo on zombie day, or something. I just blindly ploughed through my f-list and noticed that things went from zero to weird pretty quickly. I'm in a dimly lit hotel room in Prescott, AZ, all by my lonesome, reading end of the world/zombie fics. *shudder* I'm so not sleeping tonight :/ I'd toss my own fic into the ring, but, as [info]desertbell mentioned, writers have a vivid mind's eye and I *really* don't need any more of these images in my head tonight.

Ugh.

In other news, I tried on a pair of shorts that's been hanging in my closet for almost 4 years now. It's been 4 years since I've been slim enough to fit into them (even though they're a stretched out size 12). Guess what? They fit! Still a teensy bit tight in the legs (yay, Norwegian stocky build), but almost fit for public consumption. Woot!

Off to snarf a late dinner and watch some mind-rotting TV before bed...busy conference day tomorrow. G'nite everyone!

more drive-by tidbits

  • Jun. 6th, 2007 at 12:30 PM
Good morning Gil
Sorry for the bullet point postings, but that's about all my brain's capable of these days. Sleep debt is evil.

-I'm really enjoying BT lately. I've always had a few of his songs in my mp3 rotation, but it wasn't until I joined lala.com and ordered a bunch of his CDs that I really got to appreciate the scope of the albums. There's a lot more than random pop/techno fluff going on here. It's great background noise for writing (especially the earlier albums), and mellow, more epic compositions to relax with in the later albums. I wish I could have seen him when he came through Tucson a couple of months ago. Ah well...next tour, perhaps.

-I'm almost done with Once Upon Stilettos, the second book in a series by Shanna Swendson. These are cute little fluffy chick lit novels about a 20-something woman who moves to NY and lands a job working in a company specializing in magical products. It's typical chick lit - office drama, dating woes, perfect roommates - but the books are really well written and have been a wonderful distraction during this hectic crunch. Highly recommended if you have any interest in the genre (start with Enchanted, Inc.)

-One of the cats I'm housesitting has an internal alarm clock set for 5am. If it's 5am, it's time for FOOD. This entails walking down the hallway caterwauling like it's about to die. Uggh. This must be what it feels like to have kids in the house - chronic sleep debt, and early morning wake-up calls for food. I can handle the tired, but the headaches are about to teeter over into migraines. Not good.
I predict lots and lots of napping this weekend.

-For my bookish friends - I found another neat book trading site via another bookcrosser - bookins.com. It's like lala.com meets paperbackswap.com (which may or may not mean anything to you). I think it's USA-only for now, but might be expanding soon. Why I like it better than paperbackswap.com? They give you pre-paid postage labels, so you don't have to shell out for stamps, or make a special trip to the post office - just tape a label on and drop it in any outgoing mailbox. It costs $3.99 when you receive a book, but that's about comparable with most used book stores, and it's delivered to your door. Heck, I haven't found anything at Bookman's for less than $4.50 in the past couple of years, so I'm cool with $3.99 for the occasional book. They do have a referral program, and if you're into such things, my referral link is here - http://www.bookins.com/index.php?invite=1M48cd9cA
I'd recommend it even w/out a referral program, though :) Also, the customer service is excellent - I've been trading emails with one of the site operators, and he's very responsive and eager to please the users. He's been excellent at fielding my newbie questions, and in addressing my suggestions.

-It's lunch time so I'm off to finish Once Upon Stilettos ... further bulletins as events warrant.

grumble, grumble

I'm housesitting right now, so am discombobulated as always. Despite this, I managed to make it out of the house, mostly on time, with all my little trinkets and such that I'll need for my day. Trinkets like my cell phone, thumb drive, Clif bar for breakfast, etc. It's almost a given that I'll forget any number of little things on my first day of housesitting, and with a 45 minute drive out to the place, it's not like I can swing out at lunch time to pick up anything I missed.
Unfortunately, I somehow manged to leave my lunch behind :(

I'll come home to a stale PB&J and a spoiled yogurt tonight. I'm really peeved about wrecking the yogurt as I love that stuff (Trader Joe's fruit on the bottom). Looks like I'll be hoofing it to Subway on my lunch break. *pout*

On the plus side, the place I'm staying at has a lovely, gym quality elliptical trainer in a "fitness room" with a window-mounted air conditioner. This means I can workout on a gorgeous machine w/ all the cold air I want. Spoiled rotten, I tell ya.

Things that go crunch in the night

A few years ago, I picked up a modest little twin bed frame from the local Copenhagen store. Copenhagen is an upscale place, and is generally known for quality furniture. The bed panels are particle board w/ laminate, but they seemed pretty decent. When we moved a couple of years ago, the bed frame got torqued while manouevering it around the tight turn to my room, and ever since then, it's made these awful, loud, wooden creaks and cracks. It's quite the cacophony at even the slightest movement. But, hey, the bed holds a mattress, and is comfy, so what's the harm?

Got that answer last night.

The bf was perched on the edge of the bed and I was sitting near by. I shifted my weight ever so slightly and BAM, with a crack like a gunshot, the entire front panel of the bed split in half. The particle board - and the reinforcing beam behind it - cracked right down the middle, and dumped both of us on the floor.

Geh.

This happened just before midnight, mind you. A time when one is supposed to be winding down for sleep, and the darn thing shatters, giving me a huge adrenaline spike. I wrestled the mattress off the remains of the frame and finally got to sleep around 2am. Tonight I get to vacuum up all the wicked sharp pieces of particle board and figure out what to do with the tubs of books that had previously been stored under the bed.
Argh. Looks like I'll be making a trek to IKEA soon. Sticking to steel or solid wood this time - I've sworn off particle board.

(Pictures coming later tonight)

Clerks - headdesk
Comedian Richard Jeni has died in an apparent suicide. This is extremely sad news for me - he was one of my favorite stand-ups, and a huge chunk of my friends's in-jokes from high school are from his material. I kept hoping he'd tour near here so I could finally see him live. Guess that won't be happening now.

RIP.
